Kufstein Fortress

The Emblem of the Town

A stay in Kufstein is always dominated by the sight of Kufstein Fortress, which sits enthroned on a mountain 90 meters above the town. It has been an emblem of Kufstein for centuries, visible from far afield. The easiest way to reach the castle is to ride up on the glass Maximilian Lift, where you will be greeted by magical views out across Kufstein.

In the fortress, you won't just discover ancient walls, it is also home to a heritage museum that presents local traditions and history. Aside from primeval history (exhibits as much as 30,000 years old), folk history, old crafts and the history of the castle itself, including times of siege, the heritage museum also presents art, old and new, as well as the second-biggest bird collection in Tyrol.

But the true highlight is the so-called Heroes' Organ with its 5,000 pipes: the sound of this biggest open-air organ in the world can be heard daily for 15 minutes beginning at 12 noon, even all the way down below in town.

Special Events at Kufstein Fortress

Concerts are held year-round at Kufstein Fortress, as are operettas and stage plays. Year in and year out, thousands of visitors are drawn to the Josefsburg by Operetta Summer and by the Knights' Festival, as they are by renowned Austrian and international musicians.

The "Festungsarena" features a retractable roof and has made quite a name for itself as one of the most important event venues in all of Austria. More about the various special events hosted at Kufstein Fortress can be found right here.

Culinary Roundtable

The Josefsburg also hosts "Lord-of-the-Castle Banquets", where groups of 10 or more can enjoy, by advance reservation, authentic dishes and mouth-watering specialties in a roundtable setting appropriate to the period. In summer, the banquet is accompanied by delightful music and entertaining acting.
