Passion Play Thiersee

History and significance of the Passion Play

The Thiersee Passion Play looks back on a long tradition dating back to 1695. Its origins lie on a summer stage in Vorderthiersee, below the parish church of St. Margaretha. Today, the performances take place in the Thiersee Passion Play House, located directly on the shores of Lake Thiersee, creating a special connection between landscape and theatre.

Every six years, around 250 participants from the Thiersee community, spanning several generations, bring the life, suffering and death of Jesus Christ to the stage. Strong local involvement and the open-air venue give the Thiersee Passion Play its distinctive character, combining tradition, cultural heritage and a strong sense of community.

A look back at the most recent Passion Play

The most recent Passion Play in Thiersee took place in 2022. Across several performances, many visitors experienced a contemporary production that placed tradition and musical interpretation at its centre. The Passion Play was presented as a shared community project by performers from the region.
