Kufstein Fortress

Once ‘hotly contested and fiercely disputed’, Kufstein Fortress lies at the heart of the town. For a long time, Kufstein Fortress was an important stronghold at the entrance to the Alps. Powerful and visible from afar, the landmark of the town of Kufstein rises on an elongated dolomite rock running north to south. The history of the fortifications is part of military history and reflects the evolution of weapon technology.

The earliest existence of the castle, as a relatively small complex, from around 1000 to the middle of the 13th century, can no longer be reliably reconstructed due to a lack of written records. However, the first documented mention of it as ‘castrum choufstain’ in 1205 can be verified in an agreement between Bishop Konrad of Regensburg and Duke Ludwig of Bavaria.

Margarethe von Tirol-Görz, better known by her nickname ‘Maultasch’, received the complex as a morning gift in 1342. This was followed by Bavarian invasions and wars of succession. Two lords are irrevocably linked to the history of Kufstein Fortress. Hans von Pienzenau, who was appointed caretaker and castle captain around 1500. Emperor Maximilian I, who ordered his artillery to bombard the fortress in 1504 with iron cannonballs from heavy guns, completely destroying not only the city walls and fortification towers within a few days, but also conquering Kufstein Fortress itself.

This resulted in a flurry of construction activity, the most significant of which was Maximilian's Kaiserturm tower. Maximilian I did not live to see its completion in 1522. It is worth noting that this tower transformed the castle into a fortress. Between 1703 and 1813, there followed years of sieges and conquests. It was a back and forth between Bavaria and Austria until Kufstein and Tyrol were awarded to Austria in 1814. From the end of the 18th century and especially in the 19th century, Kufstein Fortress was used as a prison. With the acquisition of the fortress by the city of Kufstein in 1924, it became its property.

Various high-calibre events, such as concerts and theatre performances, take place at Kufstein Fortress throughout the year. Below you will find an event calendar with the most important events for 2026.
