Location and Size

Lake Hechtsee is situated in the district of Kufstein in Tyrol, nestled in the Brandenberg Alps. The legend behind the name

The name Hechtsee has nothing to do with the fish of the same name. It dates back to an old Tyrolean legend.

According to legend, a fairy named Hechta once lived in this lake. When her lover, a young shepherd, broke his faith to her, she took her revenge. She conjured water from the ground, which swallowed the shepherd, his flock and his entire pasture forever. Since then, the lake has borne her name.
